Conference & Meeting Associate Deans & Deans on Research

The focus will be on research, and while the conference is intended primarily for faculty members who serve as Associate Deans of Research (or equivalent) in their respective schools, participation is also open to other faculty who serve in positions of research leadership, or who have an interest in helping to encourage greater research productivity within business schools.  Deans are, of course, also welcome.

The theme will be “Building Excellence in Research Cultures for Canadian Business Schools”, with a focus on how to enhance research productivity and quality in business schools. The purpose of this event will be to provide a forum where business schools across Canada can discuss ideas, exchange perspectives, and explore potential areas of research collaboration.  Ultimately we would like to encourage and support the development of a network of associate deans; this is a positive first step toward that goal.

Schools will be surveyed shortly for feedback regarding potential topics for discussion, with a more formalized draft agenda for this event available at a later date.

CFBSD Research Conference 2013:  Preamble

As we know, a critical part of the academic mission of every business school in Canada is to advance management research. In attempting to address this priority we must seek to ensure that research meets high standards of scholarly rigour, but at the same time, we must also support work that is relevant to the needs of the broader society. Numerous challenges are involved in attempting to meet these dual objectives. The most important imperatives, however, are to ensure that Canadian business schools can continue to recruit and retain talented faculty members, create an environment in which management scholars are able to do research of the highest quality, and connect academic research to the world of management practice.

As an overall focus, we are seeking to build the discussion around three key questions that we believe will be critical to the future of research in Canadian business schools, specifically:

  1. How well are Canadian business schools performing in research, relative to their competitors in other industrialized countries?

  1. What are the defining characteristics of a strong business school research culture, and what are the key success factors for building and sustaining such a culture?

  1. What needs to be done to improve the administration of management research within Canadian business schools, so as to increase research output, and improve research quality and relevance?
