Position: Open rank position in Business Administration to support technology ecosystem

Applications are invited for a tenure-track faculty position in any business discipline at any rank with a proposed commencement date of January 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is subject to budgetary approval.

Vision for the position

This position plays a strategic role in fulfilling Memorial University’s commitment to the future of Newfoundland and Labrador by contributing to a well-educated citizenry and a diverse economy. The recent growth in the high-tech industry in the province - as exemplified by the acquisitions of Verafin, a St. John’s-based information technology company by Nasdaq in February 2021 and of Clockwork Fox Studios by Carnegie Learning in April 2021 - is key to that diversity. The achievements of the Genesis Centre, one of Canada’s most renowned incubators, and of the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE), recognized as one of the top five emerging entrepreneurship centres in the world in 2019 and 2020, highlight the role technology industries, such as those that provide or employ business analytics based services and products, contribute to Newfoundland and Labrador’s long-term success. A number of startups such as Colab and Mysa have emerged from Genesis and MCE, and could very well be the next Verafin. Memorial University of Newfoundland has a duty to the people of the province to ensure that its graduates have the expertise to support the Newfoundland and Labrador technology ecosystem. The Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) needs to contribute to the betterment of the Province by educating future generations to be adaptable and learning-oriented and equipped with the relevant knowledge, skills and expertise to contribute to the success of the Newfoundland and Labrador technology ecosystem. The FBA is looking to hire a tenure-track faculty from any business discipline who will be willing to work closely with local organizations such as techNL, Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association (NEIA), Bounce Health Innovation, Genesis and MCE, and the provincial government to identify important questions for technology industries, research on them and provide business and policy recommendations.


Applicants should have or be very near completion of a PhD or a DBA in any business discipline, have demonstrated research productivity at a level appropriate to the rank and a commitment to teaching and research in a university environment. Substantial experience supporting technology start-ups directly or indirectly through working with government, industry associations, incubators, funding agencies, investors, or other relevant organizations is desirable. Experience working with and detailed knowledge of the Newfoundland and Labrador technology sector and an ability to establish, maintain, and leverage research collaborations with practitioners would be a definite asset. A record of developing and teaching business analytics related content at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in any business disciplines (or across disciplines), using a range of modalities such as distance or blended learning, experiential learning, or collaborative teaching would be a strong advantage. The ideal candidate will have experience and international connections with leading innovation centers (for example, Israel, Silicon Valley, Boston, Toronto, etc.) as well as exposure to domains that are becoming strategic for Newfoundland and Labrador (cold oceans, cybersecurity, healthcare, etc.) and technologies such as software-as-a-service, artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data analytics, augmented/virtual reality, etc. Experience in interdisciplinary collaborations and achievements in areas such as policy development, patents, or the development of innovative business analytics applications or services would also be an advantage.

If the successful candidate has not completed an earned doctorate, they shall be appointed to a regular term, non-renewable three-year appointment at the rank of assistant professor. If the candidate completes all the requirements for the doctorate during the first 24 months of the term appointment, they shall begin a tenure-track appointment following completion of the requirements of the degree.
